Three years after his fiancée’s death, Elijah Stokes believes he is following God’s will and returns to his childhood home in Cocke County, Tennessee. Once there, he begins a job search with local law enforcement, finds the church of his youth about to commit large amounts of money to a questionable fund raising consultant and helps some old family friends with an overly aggressive realtor and her clients. Within days, Stokes finds himself, and his friends under attack, police stopping him for no reason, home invaded and set on fire, and a friend’s apartment ransacked. He must find out what he has stumbled onto to put himself in danger and who is behind it before someone ends up dead.
MOUNTAIN TREACHERY is the first in the Elijah Stokes series. The reader gets to see how Stokes draws from his quiet times of prayer and Bible study as he faces struggles and challenges. These quiet times are integral to the plot, but very well could minister to the reader.

I think Matt Reid has a knack for telling a good yarn, even if that yarn becomes somewhat preposterous with all the tragedies striking a single hero. Unfortunately, his sentence structures set my teeth on edge. And every once in a while, there is such a glaring mistake in grammar that it justs throws you out of the story completely. The sad part of this all is that I stopped enjoying the story and starting noticing every little error instead of being able to sit back and live the story the way the author intended. Mr. Reid, you need to have someone else proofread your work before publishing it so we can enjoy it the way you deserve.Product details

Mountain Treachery an Elijah Stokes novel edition by Matt Reid Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I loved the book. I just happen to live in the area that this book takes place in. It was an adventure trying to think of the places he takes the reader and know what he is talking about. The book is relly good and it is touching the way he brings the bible into his story. I recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next one. The main character is very interesting. Its nice to have a main character with morals and I liked the way the Bible verses were incorporated in the story. I would definatly recommend this book. A quick refreshing read.
I loved how his faith was woven into the fabric of the story. Very naturally done. Also, the truth that there is no extreme to which greed will not go was faithfully portrayed. I look forward to more from this series.

This book was recommended by a friend of mine. Upon starting the book I found it hard to get into thinking it was the book when it was really my eyes. After I got started reading it Saturday night I did not want to stop reading until I finished it. I love the character Elijah Stokes and his faith. My great grandfather's name was Elijah and he was from Alleghany county North Carolina so I would imagine my grandfather being such a man. Looking forward to another in the series.
The best Christian fiction I have read so far!! Full of action, detail, kept my attention. I frequently skip over when reading but the details and descriptions were excellent. I did not skip any of it. No boring parts. I recommend to anyone who enjoys reading Christian thrillers. I really enjoyed the Bible references and lessons learned (pointed out) by the main character.
This is a thoroughly engrossing tale of a strong man of faith. It is set in East Tennessee and the descriptions are beautiful. Elijah Stokes is still recovering from the loss of his fiancé and is trying to discern God's will for his life. He has applied for a job with the Cocke County Sherriff's Office. He felt like this was God's leading, but nothing seems to be happening. While waiting to hear, he stumbles across several seemingly unrelated situations that he feels led to investigate. He finds himself under attack and then hunted, but never loses his faith that God is with him and has a purpose for all that is happening. I felt like I came to know the characters and look forward to meeting them again in the next book.
I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. Elijah was well developed as a character and the book wrote about good things in his life as well as things that could use a little work. I loved some of the descriptions used -- they struck home with me such as "...he sadly looked at the dead and dying spruce-fir forest that had been devastated by the Balsam woolly adelgid. Trees that had once been tall, majestic and green had been reduced to light brown poles by a non-native parasite. Much like the Christian church in America, he thought. Once alive and vibrant, now merely a shell of its former self."
Elijah was a man who knew the Word of God and read the entire Bible once every two years. When he was confronting someone in his church he used scripture rather than his own opinion and he knew the scriptures chapter and verse. I also like the way he thought through what he was reading and made present day applications such as when he read Habakkuk 15-7 (when God judges Judah through Babylon) and applied it to a present day scenario such as if Suriname destroyed New York and Los Angeles and brought the United States to its knees. He also practiced being still before the Lord waiting to hear a personal message for himself each time he read the Bible.
However, the scripture parts were actually a very small part of the overall story -- I just liked those parts so I mention them. The main story was a never ending series of one thing after another happening and Elijah being a man who was not willing to stand aside and let someone else try to help out. He was willing to put himself in danger to help others and make a difference in the drugs and corruption that had infiltrated the place where he lived. There was also a secondary theme that involved the fact that he could not see the perfect girl who was right in front of him because she was "like his sister".
The one thing I thought could have been done a little differently were the number of murders that took place in the book but I am not subtracting a star for that as the murders were not done in vivid detail at all. In fact I felt that the writer took pains to let us know the deaths were quick and as painless as a murder can be!
All in all I highly recommend this book.
